Our review
The A158WEA-1EF is Casio's slim retro digital in a stainless steel case on a matching steel bracelet. It has the same useful set as the cheaper F-91W: alarm, hourly chime, stopwatch and a light. The steel makes it feel more like a proper grown-up watch. The compromises are modest water resistance and the fact that it shows the time only in digits.
What it is
The A158 belongs to Casio's Vintage line, built on the look of its 1980s digital watches. This reference, the WEA, has a silver-tone steel case and bracelet with a grey LCD. Within the range it sits between the plastic F-91W and the gold or fancier A168 models, using the same simple function set in a more upmarket body.
The movement
It is a quartz digital module with a battery that Casio quotes at around seven years. Accuracy is the usual Casio digital figure of roughly 30 seconds a month either way. There is no solar charging, no radio sync and no phone link, so you set it by hand and top up occasionally. Features include a daily alarm, an hourly time signal, an auto calendar and a stopwatch, plus a backlight that is a small LED for reading in the dark.
On the wrist
The case is slim and compact, a little over 33 mm wide, and wears well on small to medium wrists and on anyone who dislikes bulky watches. The steel bracelet has a simple folding clasp and is easy to size, though some owners find the links slightly rattly and light. It is much lighter than a conventional steel watch, which is part of the charm. If you have a large wrist, a model with a bigger case will look better.
Water and everyday wear
Casio rates it as water resistant for everyday splashes, so treat it as fine for hand washing and rain but not for swimming or the shower. The glass is mineral, which holds up better to everyday knocks than resin. The steel will show fine scratches over time, but that is part of its worn-in appeal. There is no lume, so the backlight is how you read it in the dark.
Against the alternatives
The Casio F-91W-1YEF is lighter and cheaper but resin throughout. The Casio A168WG-9EF is the gold-tone cousin with a slightly different feel, and the Casio A168WEM-1EF is another steel-case sibling if you prefer a darker face. If you want something far tougher, the Casio G-Shock DW-5600E-1V gives a proper water rating but is much larger and more casual.
Who it's for, and who should skip it
It suits people who like the 1980s digital look, want a light bracelet watch for work or travel, and prefer the feel of metal to resin. It also works as a low-risk spare. Skip it if you want hands on a dial, strong water resistance or any smart features. If you are after a rugged watch for sport, choose a G-Shock instead.
