Pre-owned
Pre-owned luxury watches in the UK
How buying a second-hand Rolex, Omega, Tudor, Cartier or Patek Philippe works in the UK, how to do it safely, and what to check on each popular model.
What pre-owned means, and why prices differ from new
A pre-owned watch is any watch that has been sold at least once before: worn daily for years, or kept unworn in its box. Prices are set by the market, not the maker, so they can sit well below the new price or, for watches that are hard to buy new, above it.
What moves the price: the exact reference, condition, whether it has its original box and papers, service history, and how easy the watch is to get new. Watches aren't investments; pre-owned prices fall as well as rise.
How to buy pre-owned safely in the UK
- Authorised pre-owned programmes. Rolex Certified Pre-Owned watches are checked under Rolex's own programme and sold by authorised dealers, including Goldsmiths and Mappin & Webb, with a Rolex guarantee. You pay more than in a private sale, but you know what you're getting.
- Chrono24. A large marketplace of dealers and private sellers. Pay through its Trusted Checkout escrow, which holds your money until the watch arrives and you're happy with it.
- eBay Authenticity Guarantee. On eligible watches of £1,500 or more, eBay sends the watch to an independent authenticator before it reaches you.
- Private sales. The cheapest route and the riskiest: no escrow, no returns and little comeback. Meet somewhere safe, see the watch in person, and never pay a stranger by bank transfer.
- Stolen-watch checks. Ask for the serial number and check it against a stolen-watch register such as The Watch Register before you pay.
- Box, papers and service history. The serial on the warranty card should match the watch. Papers add value but can be faked; service receipts from the brand or a known watchmaker help.
- VAT. Dealers often sell second-hand watches under the VAT margin scheme, so the invoice won't show VAT separately and you can't reclaim it.
