Our review

The Casio LA670WEGA-9EF is a small gold-tone digital watch on a matching bracelet, in the compact ladies' LA670 family. It shows time in digits and adds an alarm, stopwatch and backlight. The battery lasts years, so ownership is nearly effortless. The catch is that it is tiny and strictly casual in its water resistance.

What it is

The LA670 is Casio's long-standing small digital for women, a miniature cousin of the famous gold A168 style. This LA670WEGA-9EF is the gold-tone version with a bracelet to match, at 23 mm across. It has been a popular gift for years because it looks neat, is easy to use and does not demand attention.

It sits at the very bottom of Casio's range in terms of cost, but it carries the same reputation for durability that Casio digitals are known for.

The movement

There is no mechanical movement here, only a digital quartz module. Casio's figures for this kind of watch generally run to several years on a single battery, and it stays accurate to within roughly a few seconds a month. Functions include an alarm, a stopwatch and a backlight; the exact feature list is on the maker's page.

Once the battery is flat, a jeweller can replace it, and many people do so only every few years. There is no winding, no solar panel and no need for a winder.

On the wrist

At 23 mm it is a genuinely small watch, and it is meant to be. On a slender wrist it looks like a piece of jewellery rather than a tool. People used to larger watches will find it almost miniature. The case is slim and the bracelet is a narrow link design with an adjustable fastening, so it should fit smaller wrists easily.

Gold-tone finishes on watches at this level are plated rather than solid, so the colour can wear at the edges over years of daily use. That is the main drawback to bear in mind.

Water and everyday wear

Casio rates most ladies' digitals for splash resistance rather than swimming. Treat it as safe for rain and hand washing and keep it away from showers and pools unless the case back clearly says otherwise. Check the figure on the listing before you buy. The glass is a hard resin or mineral type that is fine for desk life but not tough against hard knocks.

There is a backlight for reading in the dark, though a digital backlight shows only the numbers, not a glow from the dial itself.

Against the alternatives

The nearest alternatives in our catalogue are other Casio digitals. The Casio A168WG-9EF is the larger and more famous gold version, with a wider case that suits bigger wrists. The Casio A158WEA-1EF is a plain steel option in a similar spirit, and the Casio B640WC-5AEF is a different design with the same easy functions.

If you want hands on the dial instead of digits, a Casio MQ-24 or a Timex Easy Reader is more conventional.

Who it's for, and who should skip it

It makes a good small present, a reliable bedside or travel watch, or a neat retro piece for someone who likes the gold-and-digital look. It is low cost, low maintenance and very light.

Skip it if you want a watch with hands, if you want waterproofing for swimming, or if you want a statement piece. It is also too small for anyone who likes a medium or large watch. The honest drawback is that the plating is thin and the case is very small.
