Our review

The Casio LW-203-2AVEF is a youth-sized digital watch with an alarm, stopwatch and backlight. It is a simple, light resin watch that is easy to read and to set. The battery lasts for years, so there is little to look after. The catch is that it is basic, and its small, plastic build will not suit someone who wants a smart-looking watch.

What it is

The LW-203 is a small, colourful Casio digital sold in the youth and ladies' ranges. It follows the classic recipe that made Casio's digital watches famous: a resin case, a resin strap, a plain display and a handful of useful functions. This LW-203-2AVEF is sized for smaller wrists, which is why it suits school-age children as well as adults who like something compact.

It sits at the basic end of Casio's range, in the same family as the simple digitals that have been around for decades.

The movement

There is no mechanical movement here. It uses a digital quartz module with a battery. Casio's published battery life on watches like this is several years, and accuracy is within a few seconds a month. The functions are an alarm, a stopwatch and a backlight, as well as the usual calendar. The exact features and the battery type are listed by Casio.

When the battery goes flat, a jeweller can replace it in minutes. There is no solar panel on this model, so the battery will need replacing eventually.

On the wrist

Sized for smaller wrists, the case is light and slim, and the resin strap is soft and comfortable. A buckle with several holes makes it easy to adjust for a growing child. Because the watch weighs almost nothing, children tend to forget they are wearing it, which is useful.

The display shows the time in digits rather than on an analogue dial, so it will not teach a young child to read a clock face. If you want a child to learn analogue time, pick a watch with hands instead.

Water and everyday wear

Check the water-resistance figure printed on the dial or case back of the exact watch you receive. Casio's small digitals are often rated for splashes, and many carry a 50 m or similar rating, but treat that as protection from rain and hand washing and not as a licence for diving. The crystal is resin or a similar hard plastic, which can scratch but rarely shatters.

The backlight makes it readable at night, and the resin strap shrugs off sweat and mud. It is a watch that can be thrown in a school bag without much worry.

Against the alternatives

Other digitals in the catalogue are close cousins. The Casio F-91W-1YEF is the legendary basic model with a bigger, simpler look, and the Casio A158WEA-1EF is a steel-and-digital alternative with a more adult feel. For a child who needs hands on a dial, the Timex Time Machines TW7C77300 is a good analogue choice.

The LW-203 wins on size and on its cheerful, hard-wearing build.

Who it's for, and who should skip it

It is a good first watch for a school-age child and a sensible low-cost digital for anyone who wants a small, tough watch. It is simple enough to use without instruction.

Skip it if your child wants a smartwatch with games, messaging or a camera, because this just tells the time. Skip it too if you want an analogue dial or a watch that looks smart with a suit. The honest drawback is that the resin build feels basic and will not age gracefully.
