Our review
The MTP-1302PD-1A1VEF is a plain three-hand Casio with a date and a black dial on a steel bracelet. It is a simple, inexpensive everyday watch that looks tidy with office clothes. It runs on a long-life battery. The catches are a basic finish and a modest water rating.
What it is
The MTP-1302 is part of Casio's Collection line, which covers straightforward analogue watches for everyday use. This reference has a black dial, steel case and bracelet, with a date at 3. It is one of the simplest entries in the catalogue.
It is the sort of watch that Casio has produced in huge numbers for many years, so spare straps, bracelets and batteries are easy to find.
The movement
It is a battery-powered quartz watch with three hands and a date. Casio quotes about three years of battery life. Accuracy is typical of quartz, a few tens of seconds a month either way. There is no solar or radio. When the battery runs out, it needs replacing, which any watch shop can do.
The module is basic and reliable, and there is little to go wrong beyond the battery. The date jumps at midnight and needs adjusting at the end of short months.
On the wrist
The case is a medium size, which suits most wrists, and the steel bracelet has a folding clasp. Check the listing for the exact diameter. The bracelet is light and a bit thin-feeling, and the clasp is basic. The black dial is clear and goes with most outfits.
The bracelet can be shortened by removing links with a pin tool, a job a jeweller will do quickly. Some owners find the clasp a little flimsy and replace it, and others swap the bracelet for a leather strap to dress it up.
Water and everyday wear
Casio gives a 50 m rating for this type of watch, so it is fine for rain, handwashing and a swim, but not for diving. The crystal is mineral. Lume is limited, so reading the time in the dark can be difficult.
As with many simple Casio steel watches, the dial finish and lume are plain, and the finishing is functional rather than refined.
Against the alternatives
The Casio MTP-1302PD-2AVEF and Casio MTP-1302PD-3AVEF are the same watch with different dials. The Casio MTP-B185D-1AVEF is a slightly more modern alternative. The Timex Classic T2H281 is a plain Timex. The Casio A158WEA-1EF is a digital in a steel bracelet.
If you want something smarter-looking, the Citizen Eco-Drive BM7108-81L is a step up, though it costs more.
Who it's for, and who should skip it
It suits those who want a low-cost, tidy work watch. Skip it if you want swimming capability, a refined bracelet or a distinctive look.
It makes a decent back-up or office watch, and it is one of the few places where a fresh battery will keep it going for years. For a distinctive look, choose something else.
