Our review
The BM7108-81L is an Eco-Drive three-hander with a date on a steel bracelet, powered by light. It is a straightforward everyday watch that does not need a battery change for many years if it sees regular light. It is a practical, hard-wearing choice. The catches are that exact size, crystal and water rating should be checked on the listing, and the design is plain rather than exciting.
What it is
Citizen's BM7108 sits in its everyday Eco-Drive sports range, a family of solid three-hand steel watches with a date. This 81L reference is on a steel bracelet. It is positioned at the practical end of the Citizen range, below the Promaster divers and the Chronograph models, and aimed at people who want a dependable daily watch.
Eco-Drive is a mature technology that Citizen has refined since the 1970s, and this model benefits from that experience without any complicated features.
The movement
The watch is solar quartz, using Citizen's Eco-Drive technology. Light falling on the dial charges a rechargeable cell, and a full charge runs the watch for months in the dark. Quartz accuracy is a few seconds a month, better than a mechanical watch, and you never set it again after the first time except for date corrections. The cell should last many years, though it will eventually need replacing during a service.
If the watch is stored in a drawer for a long time, put it on a windowsill to recover.
On the wrist
The case is a medium size and the bracelet is steel with a folding clasp, though the exact diameter and thickness should be checked on the listing. Solar watches have a slightly thicker dial and movement than some basic quartz watches, so the thickness is more than a dress watch but fine for a sports-casual piece. The bracelet can be resized by removing links.
Because the details are only partly given in the maker's headline specification, a short check of the listing for lug-to-lug length is worthwhile if you have a small wrist.
Water and everyday wear
Check the water rating on the listing, which for this style is usually enough for swimming but not for diving, and do not assume more. The crystal type should also be confirmed, as Citizen uses both mineral and sapphire across its range. The hands and indices carry lume. The watch is built for daily wear, so it takes ordinary knocks well.
Against the alternatives
The Citizen Eco-Drive BM8479-09L and Citizen Eco-Drive BM8186-07E are related solar three-handers with different looks. The Seiko SNE525P1 is a solar Seiko alternative. The Tissot PRX T137.410.11.041.00 is a smarter quartz. The Casio MTP-1302PD-1A1VEF is a simpler and cheaper steel quartz.
Who it's for, and who should skip it
It suits people who want a durable, no-maintenance watch for work and weekends. Skip it if you want a mechanical movement, a slim case, a distinctive design or a confirmed sapphire crystal.
It is a safe, sensible watch, and many owners like it precisely because they never have to think about it.

Who shouldn't buy this
Don't buy it if you want a mechanical watch to look at and look after: this runs on light and a quartz movement.
