Our review

The CA0641-16X is an Eco-Drive chronograph on a strap, powered by light, so it should not need routine battery changes. It combines a stopwatch function with the usual Citizen build. It is a practical, no-fuss sports chronograph. The catches are that exact details like case size, crystal and water rating should be checked on the listing, and a chronograph dial is busy.

What it is

Citizen's Eco-Drive chronographs form a large family, and the CA0641 is a sporty three-sub-dial model on a strap. It sits in the middle of Citizen's range, offering a chronograph with the brand's light-powered movement for a modest outlay compared with Swiss alternatives.

Citizen has built Eco-Drive for decades and the movement is well proven, so what you are choosing here is mostly the style and the strap.

The movement

The watch uses Citizen's Eco-Drive solar quartz technology: light is converted into power by the dial and stored in a rechargeable cell, and a full charge keeps the watch running for months in the dark. The chronograph times events and shows elapsed time on sub-dials. Quartz accuracy is better than any mechanical chronograph, within a few seconds a month. If the watch is left unworn for a long time, give it some daylight to recover.

The rechargeable cell is designed to last for many years, so Citizen markets it as a no-battery-change watch, though eventually it will need a service.

On the wrist

The case is a sporty chronograph size, which usually means a medium-large watch, and the strap shown is a conventional one rather than a bracelet. The exact diameter and thickness vary by reference, so check the maker's figures on the listing. Chronographs are thicker than three-handers, so expect some height on the wrist.

A strap watch is lighter than a bracelet one and easy to change, so you could swap the original for a different colour or material if you wish.

Water and everyday wear

Check the water resistance on the listing, as chronographs vary and the pushers should never be operated underwater. As a rule, assume it is fine for splashes and rain, and rely on the stated rating for anything more. The crystal type should also be confirmed on the listing. Lume on the hands and indices helps low-light reading.

The date and the chronograph are controlled by the crown and pushers, and the manual describes how to reset the hands if they ever drift.

Against the alternatives

The Citizen Eco-Drive CA0695-84E is a related Eco-Drive chronograph. The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC915P1 is a solar chronograph with a racing-style dial. The Lorus Solar Chronograph RZ503AX9 is a less expensive solar chronograph. The Bulova Lunar Pilot 96B258 is a more distinctive quartz chronograph.

The Seiko is better known and often more eye-catching, but the Citizen should hold its own for reliability and ease of ownership.

Who it's for, and who should skip it

It suits those who want a chronograph that never needs winding or a battery change, with a simple everyday look. Skip it if you want a mechanical movement, a slim watch or a clean three-hand dial.

For anyone who simply wants a dependable chronograph that does not need much looking after, it is a sensible pick, though people who like a distinctive design may find it ordinary.

Who shouldn't buy this

Don't buy it if you want a mechanical watch to look at and look after: this runs on light and a quartz movement.
