The Armani name on a fashion quartz: it looks the part, but most of the price is the label.

Our review

The Emporio Armani Diver AR11360 is a men's watch with a dive-style rotating bezel and a 100 m water rating. It is made under licence by Fossil Group and uses a bought-in quartz movement. It looks sporty and bold. The catch is that the Armani name is most of what you pay for, and Japanese and Swiss rivals offer better-made watches at the same cost.

What it is

The Diver gives the Emporio Armani look a dive-style rotating bezel, with bold markers and a sporty case. This reference, AR11360, is a men's model rated to 100 m. Emporio Armani watches are made under licence by Fossil Group, the same company behind Michael Kors and several other fashion names, and they are sold on design and brand rather than on watchmaking pedigree.

It is a fashion watch with sporty cues, not a tool diver.

The movement

Like most Emporio Armani watches, this one uses a bought-in quartz movement, commonly Japanese, powered by a battery. That means accurate timekeeping, within a few seconds a month, and no winding. We have not named the calibre, since it is not published for this reference.

Servicing is limited to a battery change every couple of years. On fashion-brand watches, a faulty movement is usually replaced as a module rather than repaired.

On the wrist

The exact case diameter and thickness should be checked on the listing, since we have not confirmed them for this reference. Emporio Armani divers are generally on the larger side, with a chunky bezel that gives them presence. The strap or bracelet varies by version, so check what is supplied.

A big case suits larger wrists best. On slim wrists it can look top-heavy, so consider the proportions before buying.

Water and everyday wear

The 100 m rating means it can handle swimming and snorkelling, provided the crown is pushed in and the seals are in good condition. It does not make the watch a dive instrument in the strict sense, and the bezel on its own is no guarantee. Have the seals checked after any battery change if you swim with it.

The crystal is commonly mineral at this level, though it should be confirmed on the listing. Lume is usually present on the hands and markers, in keeping with the dive styling.

Against the alternatives

The Tissot Seastar 1000 quartz (T120.410.11.041.00) is a Swiss diver with 300 m resistance and a sapphire crystal, and the Citizen Promaster Diver BN0150-28E is a solar diver with 200 m. The Rotary Seamatic 300m is a lower-cost diver with a good reputation.

The Armani wins on name and styling, and loses to these on specification and on durability for the money.

Who it's for, and who should skip it

It suits someone who likes a bold, sporty look and prefers the Armani name. It makes a decent gift for a style-minded wearer.

Skip it if you want a better-made watch for the money: a Seiko or Citizen at the same price beats it. Skip it if you want a genuine diving instrument. The honest drawback is that much of the cost is the label rather than the watch.
