Our review

The Gucci Dive Automatic YA136353 is a 40 mm unisex automatic with a dive-style bezel. It winds itself as you wear it, so it never needs a battery. It is one of the few Gucci automatics, and it is Swiss made. The catch is that a Tissot or Seiko automatic does the same job for a fraction of the price, and an automatic needs periodic servicing.

What it is

The Dive is Gucci's sports line, and this automatic is a rarity in a range dominated by quartz. At 40 mm and described as unisex, it suits a wide range of wrists. It is styled like a diver with a rotating bezel and bold markers, with Gucci's design details. It is made in Switzerland and sits at the premium end of the Dive range.

For anyone who wants a Gucci with a mechanical movement, this is among the few choices.

The movement

The watch is an automatic: a spring is wound by a rotor that moves as you do, so it needs no battery. Wear it daily and it keeps going, and after a few days off the wrist it will stop and need setting. The exact calibre and power reserve should be confirmed on the listing, as we are not certain of them for this reference.

Mechanical watches are less accurate than quartz, typically gaining or losing a few seconds a day, and need a service every several years. That is a real running cost to keep in mind.

On the wrist

The 40 mm case is a comfortable modern size. Automatics are normally thicker than quartz watches, so check the thickness figure on the listing. The bezel and dial give it presence, and the unisex sizing means it will look appropriate on many wrists. The strap or bracelet should be confirmed for the version you buy.

A heavier case and strap bring a solid feel but may sit proud on slender wrists.

Water and everyday wear

Check the water-resistance rating on the listing and the case back. A diver look does not guarantee dive capability, and fashion-house sports watches frequently have more modest ratings than tool divers. Only swim with it if the stated rating supports it. The crystal type and lume should also be checked for this reference.

If the watch has a screw-down crown, make sure it is fully tightened before any contact with water.

Against the alternatives

The Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 (T137.407.11.041.00) is a Swiss automatic with a long power reserve at a much lower cost, and the Seiko 5 Sports SRPD55K1 is a robust, affordable automatic with 100 m resistance. The Orient Kamasu RA-AA0002L19B is a real dive watch with an in-house automatic movement.

The Gucci offers brand and style, while the others offer more specification for the money.

Who it's for, and who should skip it

It suits someone who wants a Gucci with a self-winding movement, perhaps as a statement piece or a gift. It appeals to those who value the brand over the specification.

Skip it if you want value: a Tissot or Seiko automatic does the same job for a fraction of the price. Skip it if you want a genuine tool diver. The honest drawback is that the mechanical movement is not special for the price, and servicing costs add up over the years.

Who shouldn't buy this

Don't buy it if you want value: a Tissot or Seiko automatic does the same job for well under half the price.
