Our review

The Michael Kors Petite Lexington MK3229 is a women's watch in gold-tone plating, the smaller version of the Lexington. It uses a bought-in quartz movement and is sized for slimmer wrists. It is a glossy, easy-to-wear fashion watch. The catch is that the plating will wear in time, and much of the cost is the Michael Kors name.

What it is

The Petite Lexington is the smaller version of Michael Kors's Lexington line, sized for slimmer wrists. This reference, MK3229, has gold-tone plating, which gives it a warm, jewellery-like look. Michael Kors watches are made under licence by Fossil Group, and they are designed as fashion accessories rather than as watchmaking showpieces.

The gold tone is a plated finish, not solid gold.

The movement

The watch uses a bought-in quartz movement, normally Japanese, powered by a battery. It keeps good time, usually within a few seconds a month, and does not need winding. The calibre is not published for this reference, so we have not named one.

A battery change every couple of years is the main upkeep. Repairs on fashion-brand movements usually mean replacing the module, not repairing it.

On the wrist

The Petite size is designed for slim wrists, and the exact case diameter should be checked on the listing, as we have not confirmed it for this reference. The metal bracelet is part of the look, and the clasp is a simple fold-over type. Gold-tone watches look best against warm skin tones and in smart-casual settings.

Bracelet links on watches at this level can be lighter than on watchmaker brands. If the bracelet needs resizing, a jeweller can usually do it quickly.

Water and everyday wear

The water rating on Michael Kors fashion watches is typically modest, suitable for splashes and hand washing. Check the figure on the listing and the case back, and keep it away from showers and pools. The crystal is commonly mineral at this level, though it should be confirmed.

Gold-tone plating can wear at the edges over years of daily use, and chemicals such as perfume and hand cream can speed this up. Wipe it with a soft cloth after wearing.

Against the alternatives

The Michael Kors Lexington MK8286 is the larger sibling, and the Sekonda Elizabeth 33mm Rose Gold is a low-cost British option with a similar warm finish. The Casio LA670WEGA-9EF is a very small gold-tone digital, and the Rotary Ladies Heritage White Dial is a classic-looking alternative.

The Michael Kors suits someone who wants a recognisable name. The others are better value for the money.

Who it's for, and who should skip it

It suits someone with a slim wrist who wants a pretty gold-tone watch with a designer name. It is a nice gift for an occasion.

Skip it if you want a watch to keep for decades: a Citizen Eco-Drive or a Seiko at the same price is the better-made watch. Skip it if you want swimming resistance. The honest drawback is that plating wears, and the price is largely for the logo.

Who shouldn't buy this
