Our review

The Speedtimer SSC915P1 is a solar chronograph from Seiko's Prospex range, with a racing-style dial and a 10 bar water rating. It combines an analogue chronograph with solar charging, so there are no regular battery changes. It is a handsome, hard-working sports chronograph. The catches are the busy dial and a case that is not especially slim.

What it is

The Speedtimer name goes back to Seiko's first Japanese chronographs of the 1960s, and the solar Prospex versions revive that look with a modern movement. This SSC915 reference is a steel-bracelet model with a racing-style dial, from the middle of Seiko's chronograph range. It sits below the mechanical Prospex models in price.

Prospex is Seiko's sports and outdoor label, covering divers, pilots and speed watches, so the name signals a robust, practical design rather than a dress watch.

The movement

The watch uses a Seiko solar quartz chronograph movement, charged through the dial, so no battery change is planned in normal use. A full charge lasts for months in the dark, and a power-saving function extends it further. The chronograph measures elapsed time and has sub-dials for the stopwatch minutes and seconds. Quartz accuracy is better than a mechanical chronograph, usually a few seconds a month. Check the listing for how long to charge from empty.

The chronograph can time events up to an hour, and the hands can be reset to zero if they drift, which is a standard procedure described in the manual. Because the movement is solar it cannot be hand-wound; it needs light.

On the wrist

The case is a sports chronograph size, which is a medium-large watch, and with three sub-dials the dial is quite busy. The steel bracelet is solid, with a folding clasp. It sits fairly tall on the wrist because of the chronograph module. On small wrists the case may look large, so check the diameter on the listing before ordering.

The dial uses contrasting sub-dials and a tachymeter-style scale for the racing look, which is attractive but can make reading the time at a glance slower than on a plain three-hander.

Water and everyday wear

The 10 bar rating allows swimming and showers, but chronograph pushers should not be pressed underwater. The crystal on this Seiko line is commonly mineral or Hardlex, so check the listing and do not assume sapphire. Hands and markers have lume. It is a good everyday sports watch for hard use.

Pushers on a chronograph need care, and the usual advice is to leave the stopwatch stopped when swimming.

Against the alternatives

The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC813 is a close sibling with a different dial. The Citizen Eco-Drive CA0641-16X is a solar chronograph with a Citizen face. The Bulova Lunar Pilot 96B258 is a quartz chronograph with a smoother seconds sweep. For a Swiss take, the Tissot Seastar 1000 Chronograph T120.417.11.091.01 uses a quartz movement with a stronger water rating.

Who it's for, and who should skip it

It is for anyone who wants a good-looking sports chronograph that does not need a battery change or winding. Skip it if you want a mechanical chronograph, a slim case or a simple three-hand dial.

Who shouldn't buy this

Don't buy it if you want a mechanical watch to look at and look after: this runs on light and a quartz movement.
