Our review

The Sekonda Jenson is a larger, 45 mm watch with a chrome bracelet and a Japanese quartz movement. It is a bold, fashion-led design from a long-running UK brand. It is a plain, inexpensive way to get a large watch. The catches are the size, which is big for most wrists, and a basic finish.

What it is

The Jenson is one of Sekonda's larger men's watches, with a 45 mm case and a chrome-look bracelet. It is aimed at buyers who like a big, bold presence on the wrist at a low cost. Sekonda is a long-running British brand that fits its watches with bought-in quartz movements.

The Jenson name covers a family of larger watches, so make sure you are looking at the plain three-hand version rather than a chronograph.

The movement

The movement is a Japanese quartz, bought in rather than made by Sekonda, and the brand does not usually give a calibre. Quartz gives accuracy of a few tens of seconds a month and a battery life of a few years. A watch shop can swap the battery. There is no solar function.

Because there are no complications, servicing consists of a battery swap, and many owners treat the watch as one to run until it stops and then replace.

On the wrist

At 45 mm the Jenson is a big watch and is most at home on larger wrists. On a slim wrist it can look oversized and the lugs may overhang. The chrome-finished bracelet is a simple link style and will feel a little light given the size. Check the listing for thickness. It is a fashion piece rather than a subtle one.

Links can be removed for sizing, although a heavy bracelet on a large case may need more than one link taken out.

Water and everyday wear

The 50 m rating covers rain, handwashing and a swim, but not diving, and it is best kept out of hot showers. The finish on chrome-plated bracelets can wear at the edges over time, so expect some scuffing. Lume is limited, and the crystal type should be checked on the listing.

The size means the watch is very visible, so scuffs on the case and bracelet will show, and it is not a piece to wear for rough work.

Against the alternatives

The Sekonda Jenson Chronograph 44mm and Sekonda Jenson Chronograph 43mm are the chronograph versions. The Sekonda Maverick 43mm is a slightly smaller option. The Casio Edifice EF-527D-1AVEF is another large steel-style watch with a chronograph. For something smaller and more refined, the Sekonda Wave 39mm is a better fit for most wrists.

It undercuts most larger watches in the catalogue, but it lacks their finish and water rating.

Who it's for, and who should skip it

It suits buyers with larger wrists who like a big, bold watch without paying much. Skip it if you have a small wrist, want swimming capability, or prefer a refined bracelet and finish.

Take the dimensions on the listing seriously before you order, as 45 mm is large and returns are more likely with a watch that does not fit.
