Our review

The Sekonda Jenson Chronograph 44mm is a quartz chronograph with a steel bracelet from a long-running British brand. It aims for the look of a sporty dress watch at a modest cost. The movement is a bought-in battery quartz, so timekeeping is good and servicing is simple. The catch is size and finish: 44 mm is large, and this is a fashion-grade watch rather than an heirloom.

What it is

The Jenson is one of Sekonda's most familiar men's lines, and this version adds a chronograph to a 44 mm case with a steel bracelet. Sekonda is a British-founded brand with a history stretching back to the 1960s, and today its watches are designed in the UK and built in Asia around standard quartz parts. It sits at the affordable end of the market, well below Tissot or Seiko, and it competes on looks and features for the money rather than on movement prestige.

The chronograph is the selling point. Extra dials and pushers make a watch look busy and technical, which is exactly the effect this model is going for.

The movement

Inside is a battery-powered quartz chronograph movement. Sekonda does not make its own movements, and we have not tried to name a calibre here because the maker's listing is the place to confirm it. What matters in practice is that quartz keeps far steadier time than any mechanical watch, usually within a few seconds a month, and needs no winding or regular servicing.

The battery will need replacing every couple of years or so, and chronograph use drains it faster. A jeweller can swap it quickly. Do not expect the stopwatch to be a precision tool: it is fine for timing a boiled egg or a parking stay, not a race.

On the wrist

At 44 mm the case is large, and it will look big on anyone with a slim wrist. Chronographs also tend to be thicker than three-hand watches because of the extra mechanism, though the maker's thickness figure should be checked on the listing before you buy. The steel bracelet adds weight and presence, but links on watches at this level are often folded rather than solid, which can feel lighter and a little rattly.

The clasp will be a simple fold-over type. If the bracelet is too long, most watch shops will remove links for a small fee.

Water and everyday wear

The rating is 50 m, which means it will cope with rain, hand washing and a short swim, but it is not a watch for diving, surfing or hot showers, where steam can find its way past the seals. Pushers on chronographs are a weak point for water, so be cautious. The crystal type is not something we can confirm for this reference, so check the listing; at this level it is usually mineral glass, which resists wear but can be scratched.

Lume, if present, is likely to be modest. Do not assume it will glow all night.

Against the alternatives

The closest in spirit is the Sekonda Jenson 45mm, which drops the chronograph and costs less, and the Sekonda Velocity Chronograph 45mm, which is a sportier take. If you want a better-made quartz chronograph from a known name, the Tissot Chrono XL is a step up in finish and reputation, and a solar option such as the Lorus Solar Chronograph RZ503AX9 saves you battery changes altogether.

Against all of those, the Jenson wins only on the bracelet-and-chrono look at a restrained cost. It does not win on movement, finish or resale value.

Who it's for, and who should skip it

It suits someone who wants a sporty, busy-dialled watch for work and weekends and does not want to spend much. It is also a sensible beater to wear when you would rather not risk something precious.

Skip it if you want a small or slim watch, since 44 mm is big. Skip it too if you dislike changing batteries, if you want a watch to keep for decades, or if you want a recognised luxury name. The honest drawback is that it is a stylish but ordinary quartz watch, and it will feel it next to better-made rivals.
