Our review

The PRX quartz in blue is Tissot's 1970s-style steel sports watch with an integrated bracelet and a Swiss quartz movement. It has a 40 mm case, a sapphire crystal and a 100 m water rating. It is among the best-looking watches at its level. The drawbacks are that it is quartz in a watch many buy for its prestige, and the bracelet is not easily swapped.

What it is

The PRX is Tissot's revival of a 1978 design, with a tonneau-shaped case flowing straight into the bracelet. This T137.410 reference is the 40 mm quartz version with a blue textured dial. It sits at the accessible end of the PRX family, below the Powermatic 80 automatic models.

It is made by a brand in the Swatch Group, which means decent Swiss quality control and a wide UK service network. The blue dial is the best-known colour.

The movement

Inside is a Swiss quartz movement, running off a battery for several years before a change is needed. Accuracy is better than any mechanical watch, within a few seconds a month. Because it is a simple quartz, servicing is minimal beyond battery swaps. The three-hand layout includes a date window at 3. If you want a mechanical movement in the same design, the automatic version exists.

On the wrist

The case is 40 mm across and under 11 mm thick, so it is slim and wears comfortably under a cuff. The integrated steel bracelet tapers and has a folding clasp with some adjustment holes. Because the bracelet is part of the case design, changing to a strap is awkward, and sizing may need removal of links. It looks equally good with a shirt and with casual clothes.

The case-to-bracelet junction is smooth, so the watch looks like a single piece of steel, but sizing the bracelet may need a pin tool or a visit to a jeweller. Check the lug-to-lug figure on the listing if you have a small wrist.

Water and everyday wear

The water rating is 100 m, which allows swimming and snorkelling. The crystal is sapphire, which resists scratches well. The steel finish mixes brushed and polished surfaces that will show some marks with use. Hands and markers carry lume. It is a very robust everyday watch for its slim shape.

A 100 m rating is fine for swimming but is not a dive-watch rating, so keep it for pools and holidays rather than heavy water sports.

Against the alternatives

The Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 T137.407.11.041.00 is the automatic version for those who want a mechanical movement. The Tissot PRX T137.410.11.091.00 is the green quartz. The Citizen Eco-Drive BM7108-81L is a solar alternative with a more traditional look. The Tissot Gentleman T127.410.11.041.00 is a plainer, dressier quartz.

Who it's for, and who should skip it

It is for anyone who wants a smart, slim steel watch with a design that has fashion appeal and does not need winding. Skip it if you want a mechanical movement, a very large case, or an easy swap to straps.
