Who Longines suits
Longines is a Swiss brand in the Swatch Group, sold by the same UK dealers as Omega. It suits a first luxury watch, a graduation or retirement present, or anyone who wants a Swiss automatic from an established name without spending Tudor or Omega money. See our first luxury watch guide.
Which Longines to choose
Conquest 38: a clean everyday steel watch, £1,300. HydroConquest: the dive watch, 39mm (£1,925) or 42mm (£2,050), with a cheaper 42mm quartz at £1,350. La Grande Classique and DolceVita: slim dress watches, often bought as ladies' watches, £1,600 and £2,000. Master Collection: the classic dress line, £3,650 for the 30mm in steel and gold. Spirit: the pilot's line; it wasn't in our Goldsmiths read, so it has a search link.
What to know before buying
- The HydroConquest comes in quartz and automatic versions; the listing name tells you which.
- Longines is widely stocked, so you can usually try one in a high-street jeweller.
- Ask the dealer for the warranty term on the model you choose.
- Steel-and-gold versions cost noticeably more than steel.
Servicing
A mechanical watch wants a full service every several years: it is taken apart, cleaned, re-oiled, regulated and pressure-tested. Use the brand's own service centre or a dealer that sends it there, ask for the current price list before you commit, and keep the paperwork with the watch: a service history helps if you ever sell it.
Longines servicing generally costs less than the bigger names, in line with the watches' prices.
