The best Tudor for most people is the Black Bay 58 (£4,070 on the bracelet) or, for a smaller wrist, the 37mm Black Bay 54 (£3,690). The Ranger and Royal are the cheaper way in from £2,680, and the Pelagos FXD is the titanium tool watch at £3,680.

Who Tudor suits
Tudor was founded by Hans Wilsdorf, who founded Rolex, and it is still part of the same group. It suits someone who wants a serious Swiss watch from that stable without a waiting list: Tudors are generally available to buy at UK authorised dealers. See Rolex vs Tudor for how the two compare.
Which Tudor to choose
Black Bay 58 (39mm): the all-rounder, a vintage-style diver that works with a suit or a T-shirt. Black Bay 54 (37mm): the same idea, smaller and cheaper. Ranger (36 or 39mm): a plain field watch, the cheapest steel sports Tudor. Royal (36 or 40mm): a dressier watch with an integrated-look bracelet. Pelagos FXD: 42mm titanium with fixed strap bars. Black Bay 58 GMT: a second time zone for travellers, at £4,400.
Above £5,000 there is the Black Bay Chrono, £5,460 on the steel bracelet.
What to know before buying
- Bracelet versions cost £200 more than the strap versions of the Black Bay 54 and 58 here.
- Popular models can sell out at a branch; dealers will usually order one in.
- Buying new from an authorised dealer gets you Tudor's own warranty, which can be transferred if you sell the watch.
- The Ranger 36 and Royal 36 are worth trying on if you have a smaller wrist.
Servicing
A mechanical watch wants a full service every several years: it is taken apart, cleaned, re-oiled, regulated and pressure-tested. Use the brand's own service centre or a dealer that sends it there, ask for the current price list before you commit, and keep the paperwork with the watch: a service history helps if you ever sell it.
Tudor services through its own network; an authorised dealer such as Goldsmiths will take the watch in and send it off.
