Why people buy it

The Speedmaster Professional is the watch NASA qualified for spaceflight and astronauts wore on the Moon. It is hand-wound, so it is a mechanical classic you wind every day or two.

What to check on a pre-owned Speedmaster

  • Hesalite or sapphire: hesalite (acrylic) versions have a solid case back with the Moon engraving; sapphire versions have a display back. Hesalite scratches easily but polishes out.
  • Calibre: 3861 (2021 on, Master Chronometer) or 1861 (before). The 3861 has a slightly stepped dial; check the reference and calibre match.
  • Hand-wound: it needs winding. Wind it fully and check the chronograph starts, stops and resets cleanly.
  • Bracelet: check stretch; the 2021 bracelet has a different design from the earlier one.
  • Dial and hands: check the lume is even and the hands line up with the subdials at zero.
  • Papers: Omega warranty card or e-warranty, box and service history.

Questions

How much is a pre-owned Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch in the UK?

It depends on the reference, condition, and whether it has its box and papers. We're building a UK pre-owned price index from authenticated listings; until then, compare like-for-like listings on Chrono24 and eBay's Authenticity Guarantee.

Is it safe to buy a Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch pre-owned?

It can be, if you buy from an authorised pre-owned programme, an established dealer, or a marketplace that holds your money in escrow and authenticates the watch. Check the serial against the papers, ask for service history, and never pay a stranger by bank transfer.

What should I check before buying a used Speedmaster?

Hesalite or sapphire: hesalite (acrylic) versions have a solid case back with the Moon engraving; sapphire versions have a display back. Hesalite scratches easily but polishes out. Calibre: 3861 (2021 on, Master Chronometer) or 1861 (before). The 3861 has a slightly stepped dial; check the reference and calibre match. Hand-wound: it needs winding. Wind it fully and check the chronograph starts, stops and resets cleanly.

Does a pre-owned Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch hold its value?

Some models have sold above their new price for long spells, but watches aren't investments: prices fall as well as rise. Buy one because you want to wear it.
