Before you buy
Timex is best at simple, cheap watches that are easy to read and easy to swap straps on. Most models have Indiglo, a light that lights the whole dial, and most are quartz. Check water resistance before swimming: some Weekenders are rated to 30 m, which means splashes only.

Before you buy

Who Timex is.

Timex is an American brand that grew out of the Waterbury Clock Company, founded in Connecticut in the 1850s, and became famous for cheap, tough watches. Today it makes affordable quartz and some mechanical watches, and the Timex Group also produces watches under licence for other brands. Timex's long-running advertising slogan, takes a licking and keeps on ticking, summed up its reputation for tough, simple watches.

Timex's ranges explained.

The Weekender is the casual everyday line. Expedition covers field and outdoor watches, including the Scout and Camper. Ironman is the sports digital range for runners and triathletes. Q Timex and the Marlin are reissues of 1970s and 1960s designs. Easy Reader is a simple, clear dial line, and Time Machines are for children. Within each range there are many colours and straps, so model codes (TW followed by numbers and letters, or older T codes) are the way to identify the exact watch.

Which line to start with?

For a cheap everyday watch, the Weekender. For outdoors, the Expedition Scout or Camper. For running and swimming, an Ironman. For a retro look, a Q Timex. For a mechanical Timex, the Marlin Automatic or the MK1 Mechanical. For a dressier look, the Weekender 37mm and Q Timex Continental are smarter options.

Indiglo.

Timex's Indiglo light illuminates the whole dial evenly at the press of the crown or a button. It is one of the best lights on any cheap analogue watch and very useful at night. Most Weekender, Expedition and Easy Reader models have it.

Water resistance.

Many Weekenders and Easy Readers are rated 30 m, which means splashes only. Expedition models are often 50 to 100 m, and the Ironman 100 m. Check the rating on each model before swimming. If you swim often, the Ironman is the most water-friendly, built for swimmers and triathletes.

The Weekender tick.

The Weekender's quartz movement is known for a loud tick, which some owners notice at night. If you're a light sleeper, take it off at bedtime. Other Timex models are quieter.

Straps.

Timex's slip-through nylon straps are cheap, light, quick to dry and easy to swap, and the lug widths (often 18 to 20 mm) make replacements easy to find. Leather straps look smarter but dislike water. Changing the strap is the cheapest way to change the look; a leather strap makes a Weekender look smarter, a NATO more casual.

Q Timex and Marlin.

The Q Timex is a quartz reissue of a 1979 model, with a steel case, woven bracelet and a battery hatch on the back. The Marlin Automatic is a 40 mm automatic in a vintage dress style. Both are popular for their retro looks; finishing is simple for the price. The MK1 Mechanical is a hand-wound military-style watch for people who want a cheap mechanical Timex to wind each morning.

Battery and servicing.

Timex quartz watches run for several years on a battery. Battery changes are easy, but ask for the seal to be checked on anything you swim with. Timex watches are cheap enough that most are replaced rather than repaired. Keep the receipt for Timex's warranty.

How we choose

We haven't worn every Timex here. We chose from what UK shops sell and compared Timex's published specs: movement, light, water resistance, case material, size and strap. We favour long-running lines with years of owner feedback, such as the Weekender, Expedition and Ironman, and note known quirks like the Weekender's tick. UK prices and stock are tracked through the day. Read our full methodology →

Common questions

Are Timex watches good?

For the money, yes. They are simple, readable and reliable, with Indiglo lights and easy-to-change straps. Finishing and materials are basic at the lowest prices, but that's the trade-off.

Is the Timex Weekender waterproof?

Most Weekenders are rated 30 m, which means splashes and rain only, not swimming. If you want to swim, choose an Expedition or Ironman model rated 50 m or more.

What is Indiglo?

It's Timex's light, which illuminates the whole dial evenly. Press the crown or a button to light it. It's one of the clearest night lights on any cheap watch.

Why is my Timex Weekender so loud?

The Weekender's quartz movement has a loud tick, which is normal and widely reported by owners. It's not a fault. If it disturbs you at night, keep it in another room.

Is the Q Timex worth it?

If you like the 1970s look, yes. It has a steel case, a woven steel bracelet and a battery hatch on the back. It's not a luxury watch, and the bracelet can pull arm hairs.

What is the best Timex watch?

The Weekender is our pick for most people: cheap, readable and easy to change straps. For outdoors, the Expedition Camper or Scout; for a retro look, the Q Timex; for sport, the Ironman.
