Before you buy
Casio's cheaper watches are very good value but vary a lot in materials: resin cases are light and tough, chrome-plated cases on the retro digitals can wear at the edges, and only some models have steel cases. Model codes ending in EF or ER are the UK and European versions; codes ending JF or JR are Japanese imports. Check the water rating: the cheapest are splash-proof, the Duro diver is rated to 200 m.

Before you buy

Casio's ranges explained.

Casio sells several lines under its own name. The retro digitals (F-91W, A158W, A168W, A700W, LA670) are thin, cheap classics. The Collection range covers simple analogue watches like the MTP dress models and the MQ-24. The sports range includes the MDV-107 Duro diver, the AQ analogue-digitals and the WV radio-controlled watches. Edifice is the steel analogue line with a motorsport look. G-Shock, Baby-G and Pro Trek are separate tough lines.

Which line to start with?

For a cheap everyday watch, start with a retro digital: the F-91W if you want resin and the lowest weight, the A158W or A168W for a steel bracelet. For hands rather than digits, the MTP-1302 is a smart steel dress watch. For swimming, the MDV-107 Duro. For a bigger steel watch with a chronograph, an Edifice.

Model names decoded.

Casio's codes are compact but readable. The letters usually mark the family (F, A and LA for the retro digitals, MTP for men's analogue, LTP for women's, MDV for the diver, EF and EFR for Edifice). The suffix tells you the version: D usually means a steel bracelet, L a leather strap, G or WG a gold-tone finish, and the final digits and letters set the colour. So the MDV-107D-1A1V is the steel-bracelet Duro with a black dial.

Resin vs steel vs plated.

Resin cases and straps are light, warm and tough but can crack or split after years of sun and sweat; straps are cheap to replace. Stainless steel cases wear best. Some retro digitals have chrome-plated resin or brass cases, which can wear through at the edges with daily use, and gold-tone models are plated.

Water resistance on Casios.

Casio prints it plainly. Water Resist or WR30 means splashes only, not swimming. WR50 means swimming is fine. WR100 and WR200 are for regular swimming and snorkelling. The F-91W and A158W are 30 m; the MDV-107 and AQ-S820W are rated higher.

Light.

The F-91W and A158W have a small LED that lights one side of the display, which is dim. The A168W has an electroluminescent backlight that lights it evenly. Analogue Casios rely on luminous paint, which is weak on the cheapest models. If you need to read it at night, choose a model with a full backlight.

Solar and radio Casios.

The AQ-S820W is a solar analogue-digital with hands, a digital display, alarm and stopwatch. The WV-58R is radio controlled, setting itself from the UK time signal. These features usually cost a little more but mean less maintenance.

Battery life and servicing.

Most Casio digitals run for several years on a battery, the F-91W around seven by Casio's figure. Battery changes are simple, but get the case back seal checked if you swim. Casios are cheap enough that most people replace rather than repair them, and spare straps are easy to find.

Fake Casios.

The F-91W and A158W are so popular that fakes are common on marketplaces. Buy from an authorised UK seller; a real one has crisp printing on the dial and case back and a module number on the back.

How we choose

We haven't worn every Casio here. We picked from what UK shops stock and compared Casio's published specs: module and functions, battery life or power source, water resistance, case and strap material, light type and size. We favour long-running models whose reliability is well reported, like the F-91W, A158W and MDV-107, and we flag plated finishes that wear. UK prices and stock are tracked through the day. Common questions

Is the Casio F-91W worth it?

Yes, as a cheap, accurate everyday watch. It weighs very little, runs for years on a battery and has an alarm, stopwatch and light. Its limits are 30 m water resistance, a dim light and a resin strap that eventually splits.

Are Casio watches good quality?

For the money, very. Casio makes its own movements and has been making digital watches since the 1970s. The cheapest models use resin and plated metal that wear, but the electronics are reliable and accurate.

What is the difference between the Casio A158W and A168W?

They look nearly identical. The A168W has an electroluminescent backlight that lights the whole display, while the A158W has a small side LED. The A168W is slightly thicker and slightly dearer.

Can I swim with a Casio watch?

Check the back or dial. Water Resist or 30 m means no swimming. 50 m is fine for swimming, and 100 m or 200 m (such as the MDV-107 Duro) is fine for regular swimming and snorkelling.

Are Casio Edifice watches good?

They are solid steel quartz watches with reliable Casio movements and plenty of features for the money. They are big, often 45 mm or more, and finishing is simpler than Seiko or Citizen at similar prices.

What is the best Casio watch?

The F-91W for a cheap, light everyday digital, the A168W for a steel retro digital with a better light, and the MDV-107 Duro for swimming. For a smart analogue watch, the MTP-1302.
