Before you buy
Most women's watches are 26 to 36 mm, and many women prefer a unisex size like the 35 mm PRX, so think about what she already wears. A bracelet may need sizing at a jeweller, and an expanding or leather strap is easier to get right first time. Check the returns window and keep the box for the warranty.

Before you buy

Think about what she wears.

Look at her existing watches and jewellery: gold or silver, small or large, sporty or dressy. If she wears gold jewellery, a gold-tone watch suits; if silver, steel. If she doesn't wear a watch, a small, light, simple one is a gentle start. Notice which wrist she wears a watch on and whether she prefers bracelets or straps. If she wears a smartwatch for exercise, a small dress watch for evenings and work may be the watch she'll value.

Size.

Most women's watches are 23 to 36 mm. Many women prefer unisex sizes like the 35 mm PRX. If unsure, 28 to 34 mm is a safe middle for a dress watch. Many women's dress watches are around 28 to 32 mm, while sportier and unisex styles are 35 to 38 mm. A watch that's too big for her usual taste may sit in a drawer; one slightly small usually still gets worn.

Bracelet, mesh or strap.

A steel bracelet may need sizing at a jeweller. Mesh, leather and expanding bracelets are easier to get right without knowing her wrist size. Leather suits occasional wear; steel suits daily wear. Mesh bracelets with sliding clasps are especially forgiving, as they adjust to almost any wrist without tools.

Gold, rose gold or steel.

Gold and rose gold tones at these prices are plated and wear with time. Steel lasts longer. If she likes gold, plated is fine for occasional wear; for daily wear, steel or two-tone lasts better.

Fashion brands vs watchmakers.

Fossil, Daniel Wellington and Olivia Burton sell fashion-led quartz watches; Citizen, Seiko and Tissot are watchmakers with better movements and materials for similar money. Choose by what she'd value: the look and name, or the watch. Rotary, Bulova and Accurist sit between the two: established watch brands with smart, traditional designs at modest prices. Bulova is owned by Citizen.

Solar for no fuss.

Citizen Eco-Drive women's models charge from light and run for months without a battery change. They're a good gift for someone who doesn't want to think about a watch. The Citizen EM0500 and EW1272 are small, elegant solar models that suit everyday and dressy wear.

The Tissot PRX 35 mm.

For a special occasion, the PRX 35 mm is a Swiss watch with sapphire glass and 100 m water resistance that suits most wrists and styles. It wears slightly larger than 35 mm. It's a watch many women buy for themselves, which makes it a good bet if she likes steel and a modern look.

Engraving and returns.

Engraving on the case back makes it personal but usually rules out returns. Keep the box and paperwork, check the returns window, and buy from an authorised seller so the warranty is valid. Check with the shop whether a bracelet resize is free, and whether it affects returns.

Timing.

Watch prices move through the year, with discounts around Black Friday and in January. We track UK prices through the day, so the prices on this page are current.

How we choose

We haven't tried every watch on. We chose gifts from what UK shops sell and compared the makers' published specs: style, size, movement, materials and water resistance. We include fashion brands because many people want them, and we say plainly where a watchmaker gives more for the money. UK prices and stock are tracked through the day. Read our full methodology →

Common questions

What is a good watch gift for her?

The Casio A168WG for a fun, practical gift, a Citizen Eco-Drive for a no-fuss everyday watch, and the Tissot PRX 35 mm for a special occasion.

What size watch should I buy her?

If you're unsure, 28 to 34 mm is a safe middle for a dress watch, and 35 mm for a unisex style. Look at watches she already wears for clues.

Is gold or silver better for a gift?

Match her jewellery. If she wears gold, choose gold tone; if silver, steel. Two-tone watches suit both.

Are Daniel Wellington and Olivia Burton watches good?

They're fashion watches with simple quartz movements, chosen for their looks. They suit as fashion gifts; for better materials and movements at similar prices, look at Citizen, Seiko or Tissot.

Can I get a women's watch engraved?

Often, if the case back is solid. Small cases have limited space, and engraved watches usually can't be returned, so check first.

Is a watch a good gift for her?

Yes, if you choose a style that matches what she already wears. A small, simple watch in her usual metal tone is the safest choice. Keep the gift receipt in case she'd prefer a different size or style.
