Before you buy
A dress watch should be thin enough to slide under a shirt cuff and simple enough not to shout, which usually means a small case (36 to 40 mm), a plain dial and a leather strap or slim bracelet. Quartz is the practical choice; an automatic like the Orient Bambino adds a mechanism to enjoy at the cost of some accuracy. Water resistance on dress watches is often low, so take them off to swim.

Before you buy

What makes a dress watch.

Small, thin and simple. A dress watch usually has a 34 to 40 mm case, a plain dial with stick or Roman markers, few or no extra dials, and a leather strap or slim bracelet. It should slide under a shirt cuff without catching and not draw attention to itself.

Size and thickness.

Thickness matters as much as diameter. Quartz dress watches are usually the thinnest; automatics are a little thicker because of the rotor. The Orient Bambino is about 38 to 40 mm with a high domed crystal; the Tissot Gentleman is 40 mm. If you have slim wrists, 36 to 38 mm looks right.

Quartz vs automatic.

Quartz is practical: thin, accurate and ready whenever you put it on, which suits a watch worn occasionally. An automatic (Orient Bambino, Tissot Le Locle, Citizen NK5010) is more of a pleasure to own but stops after a day or two off the wrist. Seiko's solar dress models avoid both the battery and the resetting.

Dial and markers.

White, silver, cream and dark blue are the classic dress colours. Roman numerals and slim baton hands look formal; Arabic numerals look more casual. A date window is useful but some prefer a clean dial without one. A small seconds sub-dial or no seconds hand at all is a traditional dress touch.

Strap or bracelet.

Black or dark brown leather is the formal choice and most comfortable on a dress watch; match it roughly to your shoes and belt if you care about such things. A slim steel bracelet is more practical in summer. Check lug width (often 18 to 20 mm) so you can change the strap later.

Crystal.

Sapphire (Tissot Gentleman, Le Locle) resists scratches better than mineral glass. The Orient Bambino's domed mineral crystal looks lovely but can scratch; it's a trade-off for the vintage look.

Gold vs steel.

Gold-coloured cases at these prices are plated and wear with time, especially on the edges and clasp. Steel stays smart for longer. If you want gold tones, a plated watch is fine for occasional wear.

Value and longevity.

A dress watch worn occasionally can last decades. Buying a well-made model from Tissot, Orient or Citizen means it can be serviced, and plain designs don't date. If you'll wear it rarely, a quartz or solar model saves resetting it each time.

Wearing it with a suit.

Wear the watch on the wrist you don't write with, with the face over the back of the wrist. The cuff should cover most of it when your arm is at your side. If the watch is too thick, it pushes the cuff up and looks awkward; that's the main reason to choose a slim model.

How we choose

We haven't worn every dress watch here. We compared what UK shops sell by the makers' published specs: case size and thickness, movement, crystal, dial and strap, and water resistance. We favour models with a long record and good owner feedback, like the Orient Bambino and Tissot Le Locle, and we keep cheap options in because a good dress watch doesn't have to be expensive. UK prices and stock are tracked through the day. Read our full methodology →

Common questions

What is the best affordable dress watch?

The Casio MTP-1302 if you want something cheap and smart, and the Orient Bambino if you want an automatic. The Tissot Gentleman and Le Locle are the picks for a Swiss dress watch with sapphire.

What size should a dress watch be?

Traditionally 34 to 40 mm, and thin enough to sit under a shirt cuff. For most men 38 to 40 mm works; for women 28 to 34 mm. A watch that overhangs the wrist looks out of place with formal clothes.

Is the Orient Bambino worth it?

Yes. It's an automatic with an in-house Orient movement, a domed crystal and a classic look, at a price that's hard to beat. It's not water resistant enough for swimming and the crystal can scratch.

Can I wear a dress watch every day?

Yes, though most have low water resistance and a leather strap that dislikes water. A steel-bracelet dress watch like the Casio MTP-1302 or Tissot Gentleman works fine for everyday office wear.

Should a dress watch have a leather strap?

Traditionally yes, in black or dark brown. A slim steel bracelet is acceptable and more practical day to day. Avoid chunky bracelets and sporty straps with formal wear.

Is the Tissot Le Locle a good watch?

Yes. It is a classic Swiss automatic dress watch with a Powermatic 80 movement on newer versions, a sapphire crystal and a guilloché-style dial. It is one of the most affordable Swiss automatic dress watches.
