Before you buy
Tissot is a Swiss maker owned by the Swatch Group, and many of its models come in both quartz and automatic versions. Powermatic 80 automatics run for about 80 hours off the wrist, so they survive a weekend in a drawer. The quartz version of the same watch is cheaper to buy and to run; the automatic is for people who want the mechanism.

Before you buy

Who makes Tissot.

Tissot is a Swiss watchmaker founded in Le Locle in 1853 and part of the Swatch Group, which also owns Omega, Longines and the movement maker ETA. That gives Tissot access to well-proven Swiss movements at prices below most Swiss rivals.

Tissot's ranges explained.

The PRX is the integrated-bracelet sports watch. Seastar 1000 is the dive range, rated to 300 m. Gentleman is the everyday dress-sport watch. Le Locle is the classic automatic dress watch. Supersport and Chrono XL are larger quartz chronographs. Most ranges come in both quartz and Powermatic 80 automatic.

PRX sizes.

The PRX comes mainly in 40 mm and 35 mm. The 40 mm suits most men's wrists; the 35 mm suits smaller wrists and many women. Because the bracelet is integrated, the PRX wears larger than its diameter and is hard to swap onto a normal strap. Tissot also makes PRX chronographs and gold-tone and coloured-dial versions, so the PRX family is wider than the classic blue-dial steel model most people picture.

Quartz vs Powermatic 80.

Tissot's quartz models are accurate, thin and cheaper. Powermatic 80 automatics run for about 80 hours off the wrist, so they survive a weekend unworn, and some versions use a silicon balance spring that resists magnetism. Choose quartz for convenience and accuracy, Powermatic 80 for a mechanical watch. The quartz PRX is also noticeably thinner, which some people prefer under a cuff.

Model numbers decoded.

Tissot references follow a pattern. T137 is the PRX, T120 the Seastar 1000, T127 the Gentleman and T006 the Le Locle. The next three digits give the size and movement: 410 is a men's quartz, 407 a Powermatic 80 automatic, 210 a smaller quartz, 417 a quartz chronograph. Then 11 means a steel bracelet and 16 a leather strap, and the dial code follows (041 blue, 051 black, 091 green on the PRX).

Crystals and water resistance.

Almost every Tissot uses sapphire crystal. The PRX and Gentleman are rated to 100 m, the Seastar 1000 to 300 m and the Le Locle to 30 m. Check before swimming.

Servicing and warranty.

Tissot gives a two-year international warranty, and its movements are widely serviced by Swatch Group centres and independent watchmakers. Powermatic 80 movements need servicing like any automatic, roughly every five to ten years. Keep the warranty card, which Tissot issues with a serial number; you'll need it for claims.

Which to start with?

For one watch to do everything, the PRX quartz. For an automatic, the PRX Powermatic 80 or Seastar Powermatic 80. For a dressier watch, the Gentleman or Le Locle. For a smaller wrist, the PRX 35 mm. For a sports chronograph, the Seastar 1000 Chronograph or Supersport Chrono, both quartz with sapphire crystals.

Buying in the UK.

Buy from an authorised UK retailer so the warranty is valid. The PRX is popular and widely copied; a genuine Tissot comes with a warranty card and serial number.

How we choose

We haven't worn every Tissot here. We chose from what authorised UK shops sell and compared Tissot's published specs: movement, power reserve, crystal, water resistance, size and bracelet. The PRX and Powermatic 80 have a long record of owner feedback, which we lean on rather than marketing. UK prices and stock are tracked through the day. Read our full methodology →

Common questions

Is Tissot a good watch brand?

Yes. Tissot is a Swiss maker with a long history, owned by the Swatch Group, and it offers proven Swiss movements, sapphire crystals and good finishing at prices below most Swiss rivals.

Is the Tissot PRX worth it?

Yes, for a steel everyday watch. It has Swiss build, sapphire glass, 100 m water resistance and a well-finished integrated bracelet. The downsides are that the bracelet is hard to swap and the case shows scratches on its polished surfaces.

What size Tissot PRX should I get?

The 40 mm suits most wrists over about 16.5 cm; the 35 mm suits smaller wrists and many women. The integrated bracelet makes both wear larger than their diameter.

What is Powermatic 80?

It is Tissot's automatic movement, built within the Swatch Group, with a power reserve of about 80 hours. It means the watch keeps running for over three days off the wrist.

Is the PRX quartz or automatic better?

The quartz is thinner, more accurate and cheaper. The Powermatic 80 offers a mechanical movement visible through the case back and a long power reserve. Choose by whether you want a mechanical watch.

Is Tissot the same company as Omega?

Both are owned by the Swatch Group, but they are separate brands with different prices and movements. Tissot benefits from the group's movement maker ETA.
