Before you buy
Versace watches are made under licence and run on quartz movements. They cost as much as a good Swiss watch from a real watchmaker, and at the same price a Tissot or a Hamilton is the better watch. What Versace gives you is the look: gold tone, Greek key and the Medusa head, and no one will mistake it for anything else. Gold tone is plating, so expect wear on the edges.

Before you buy

Who makes Versace watches.

Versace watches are made under licence by Timex Group's luxury division, in Switzerland. Versace provides the design; Timex Group handles making and distribution. That gives them Swiss Made status, unlike many fashion watches. Timex Group makes watches for several fashion brands and runs a Swiss operation for its dearer licences. In practice that means competent construction and Swiss quartz movements, with the design decisions made by Versace.

Swiss quartz.

Most Versace watches use Swiss quartz movements, which are accurate and need a battery every few years. It's the same basic technology as much cheaper watches. You're paying for design and name. Quartz also means the watch keeps good time and is ready to wear whenever you pick it up. A battery change is simple, but use a jeweller who can pressure-test the seals afterwards if you ever get the watch wet.

The ranges explained.

Hellenyium features the Greek key pattern and Medusa head. Greca uses the Greca motif around the bezel or case. Icon Active is the sporty line. Greca Edge and other models play with the same signatures. Most designs lean on the same few Versace signatures, the Medusa head and the Greek key, so the choice is about how loudly you want them to show: a small Medusa on a plain dial, or a full Greca bezel and gold finish.

What the money buys.

Versace watches cost as much as a good Swiss watch from a traditional watchmaker. At the same price, a Tissot or Hamilton is the better watch. What Versace gives you is the look. That is not a criticism: the look is the point, and Versace's designs are instantly recognisable in a way few watchmakers' are. Just be clear that the extra money is going on the design and name, not on a better movement or longer life.

Size.

Versace watches range from around 35 mm for women's models to 42 to 45 mm for men's. Many are bold and wear large. Check the size. The men's Hellenyium and Greca models often have thick cases and wide bezels that make them look larger than the stated diameter. If you have a slim wrist, try one on or compare its size with a watch you already wear.

Materials.

Versace uses steel, gold PVD and sapphire crystals on many models. Gold tones are coatings that can wear on edges. Ion-plated gold and two-tone models make the most of the Versace look but show wear first on the bracelet clasp and case edges. Steel models keep their finish longer.

Resale.

Versace watches lose much of their value once bought, like most fashion watches. Expect to get back only a fraction of what you paid if you sell, especially without the box and papers. Buy one to wear and enjoy.

Servicing.

Battery changes at a good watchmaker; use a Versace service centre for warranty work. Keep the warranty card and receipt, which you'll need for any claim. Versace bracelets and straps are brand specific, so look after the spare links.

Fakes.

Versace is widely counterfeited. Buy from authorised retailers; genuine watches come with a warranty card. Fakes often get the Medusa detailing and dial printing slightly wrong and come without a warranty card. A price far below the usual is the giveaway.

How we choose

We haven't worn every Versace here. We compared what UK shops sell by published specs: movement, size, materials and design, and we're plain that the price is mostly the design and name. UK prices and stock are tracked through the day. Read our full methodology →

Common questions

Are Versace watches good quality?

They're well-made Swiss quartz watches with good materials. They're not technically special; a Tissot or Hamilton at the same price gives more watch. You're paying for the design. Cases and bracelets are solidly made, and many models use sapphire crystals.

Who makes Versace watches?

Timex Group's luxury division, under licence, in Switzerland. Versace provides the design and Timex Group handles making, distribution and after-sales. Timex Group also makes watches for other fashion brands.

Are Versace watches Swiss made?

Yes, most are Swiss made with Swiss quartz movements. Check the dial and case back for the Swiss Made marking on the model you're looking at. The movements are quartz, so the Swiss origin adds cost more than practical benefit.

Do Versace watches hold their value?

Generally not. They lose much of their value once bought. Like most fashion watches, they're worth a fraction of their price on the secondhand market. Keep the box and papers if you might sell later.

What is the Versace Greca?

A line featuring the Greca (Greek key) motif, one of Versace's signature designs, often around the bezel or case. Greca models range from subtle steel watches with the pattern on the bezel to bold gold pieces covered in it. Greca Edge and Greca Logo are variations on the same idea.

Is a Versace watch worth it?

If you love the design, yes: no other brand looks like it. If you want the best watch for the money, a Tissot or Hamilton at the same price is the better-made watch. Think of a Versace as a piece of the Versace look rather than a watchmaking purchase.
