Who shouldn't buy it: Don't buy it if you want value: a Tissot or Seiko automatic does the same job for well under half the price.

Who makes Gucci watches.
Unlike most fashion houses, Gucci makes its watches in-house through Gucci Timepieces in Switzerland, part of the Kering group. That gives them Swiss Made status, which most fashion watches don't have. Gucci has made watches since the 1970s, and keeping production in-house is unusual among fashion houses. It means Gucci controls the design, assembly and after-sales service directly.
Movement.
Nearly all Gucci watches use Swiss quartz movements, the same basic technology as much cheaper watches. A few, like the Gucci Dive Automatic, use mechanical movements. Quartz is accurate and practical; you're paying for design, not engineering. Gucci's automatic models, such as the Dive Automatic, use Swiss mechanical movements and show them through a display back on some versions. They cost noticeably more than the quartz equivalents.
Gucci's ranges explained.
G-Timeless is the classic line, with bee, snake and tiger motifs. G-Frame is the rectangular design. Interlocking uses the double-G logo. Dive is the sporty line, with 200 m water resistance. Within each range there are many sizes, dial colours and straps, so the reference number (YA followed by six digits) is the way to identify the exact watch.
What the money buys.
You're paying for Gucci's design, branding and Swiss assembly. For the same money, a Tissot or Longines gives you more watch in engineering terms. Buy a Gucci because you love the design. Gucci's designs are bold and instantly recognisable, and the Swiss assembly gives a solid feel. If the design is what draws you, that's a fair reason to buy one; just don't expect the movement to be special.
Size.
Gucci watches range from small women's models around 27 to 29 mm to men's models around 38 to 42 mm. The Dive is 40 mm. Check the size on each model. The G-Frame's rectangular case wears differently from a round watch of the same width, so check the length as well. Small G-Timeless models suit slim wrists and are often bought as dress watches.
Materials.
Gucci uses stainless steel, PVD gold coatings and some leather and nylon straps. Gold tones are coatings that can wear. Crystals are typically sapphire or mineral, depending on the model. Many G-Timeless models come on leather or nylon straps with Gucci's web stripe; these are easy to replace through Gucci but cost more than generic straps.
Resale.
Like most fashion watches, Gucci watches lose much of their value once bought. If resale matters, a watch from a traditional watchmaker holds value better. Gucci watches hold value a little better than licensed fashion brands, but still sell for a fraction of their price secondhand. Keep the box and papers.
Servicing.
Gucci quartz watches need battery changes every few years; use a Gucci service centre or a good watchmaker to keep the warranty valid and the seals checked. Keep the warranty card and receipt, which you will need for any claim.
Fakes.
Gucci is widely counterfeited. Buy from authorised retailers; genuine watches come with a warranty card and serial number. Fakes are especially common for G-Timeless and Dive models. Be wary of prices far below the usual, sellers without a returns policy, and listings without a warranty card.
We haven't worn every Gucci here. We compared what UK shops sell by Gucci's published specs: movement, size, materials, water resistance and design, and we're plain that Gucci's price is mostly design and name rather than engineering. Common questions
Are Gucci watches good quality?
They're well-made Swiss quartz watches with good materials. They're not technically special: a Tissot or Longines at the same price offers more engineering. You're paying for the design and name. Cases and bracelets are solid and well finished, and Gucci controls production itself.
Are Gucci watches Swiss made?
Yes. Gucci makes its watches in Switzerland through Gucci Timepieces, part of the Kering group. Most use Swiss quartz movements. Gucci has made watches since the 1970s, which is unusual for a fashion house.
Do Gucci watches hold their value?
Generally not. Like most fashion watches, they lose much of their value once bought. Rare or vintage models can be exceptions. They hold a little better than licensed fashion brands, but they're not an investment. Keep the box and papers if you might sell.
Is the Gucci Dive a real dive watch?
It's rated to 200 m with a rotating bezel, which covers swimming and snorkelling. It's more a fashion sports watch than a professional diver, but practical for water. The Dive Automatic adds a Swiss mechanical movement for those who want one.
What is Gucci G-Timeless?
Gucci's classic watch line, known for its bee, snake and tiger motifs on the dial. It comes in many sizes and finishes, mostly with Swiss quartz movements. Small sizes around 27 to 29 mm are popular as women's dress watches; larger sizes suit men.
Which Gucci watch is best for a man?
The Gucci Dive at 40 mm is the most versatile, with water resistance good enough for swimming. The larger G-Timeless models suit dressier wear. Both are Swiss made, mostly with quartz movements.
