Before you buy
Who makes Michael Kors watches.
Michael Kors watches are designed and made under licence by Fossil Group, which also makes watches for brands like Emporio Armani and Diesel. The Michael Kors brand provides the design direction; Fossil handles production. That's why a Michael Kors feels much like a Fossil or Emporio Armani in hand: similar movements, cases and bracelets, with Kors's styling on top. Warranty work goes through Fossil's service network.
Movement.
Michael Kors watches run on quartz movements, usually Japanese. They're accurate and practical. You're paying for the look and name rather than the engineering. Quartz is ready to wear whenever you pick the watch up and needs a battery every couple of years. Chronograph models use more battery if you leave the stopwatch running.
Ranges explained.
Runway is the slim, minimalist line. Lexington is a chunkier chronograph-style design. Parker and Darci feature crystal-set bezels. Bradshaw is the oversized chronograph look. Pyper and Raquel are dressier styles. Many models come in a full-size and a Petite version, so if you like a design but find it too big, look for the Petite. Names repeat across many colourways, so check the reference number (MK followed by four digits) to be sure you're getting the exact watch.
What the money buys.
You're paying for the design, branding and fashion appeal. For similar money, Citizen, Seiko or Tissot offer better movements and materials. Buy a Michael Kors because you love the style. Michael Kors watches are popular because they look glamorous and photograph well, and that is a fair reason to buy one. Just don't expect the movement, glass or long-term value of a watchmaker's watch at the same price.
Size.
Michael Kors watches are often large and bold, especially Bradshaw and Lexington. Petite versions suit smaller wrists. Check the size before buying. The Bradshaw and Lexington are often 43 to 45 mm and thick, which reads as a deliberately oversized look on many women's wrists. The Runway and Petite models are slimmer and smaller.
Gold tone and plating.
Gold and rose gold finishes are plating over steel, which wears with time, especially on edges and clasps. Silver steel models wear better. Rose gold is especially popular and wears the same way. If you'll wear it daily, a silver steel or two-tone model will look newer for longer.
Crystal-set models.
Parker, Darci and others have crystal-set bezels or dials. They catch the light but can lose stones if knocked. Stones are usually glued in; if one falls out, a jeweller can often replace it, but keep the watch away from hard knocks and harsh cleaning products.
Resale.
Michael Kors watches lose most of their value once bought. If resale matters, choose a traditional watchmaker. Expect a small fraction of what you paid on the secondhand market, even with the box. Buy one to enjoy wearing.
Battery and servicing.
Quartz batteries last a few years. A jeweller can change them; ask for the seal to be checked if you get it wet. Most models are rated around 50 to 100 m, enough for hand washing and the odd swim, but it's best to take a fashion watch off before swimming.

Common questions
Are Michael Kors watches good quality?
They're decently made fashion quartz watches. Materials and movements are basic for the price; Citizen, Seiko or Tissot offer more watch for similar money. You're paying for the look. They're reliable for what they are, and the quartz movements keep good time.
Who makes Michael Kors watches?
Fossil Group, under licence. Fossil makes watches for several fashion brands. Fossil also makes Emporio Armani, Diesel and its own Fossil watches, so the build quality is similar across those brands. Warranty work goes through Fossil.
Do Michael Kors watches hold their value?
No. They lose most of their value once bought, like most fashion watches. Keep the box and papers if you might sell, but expect a fraction of the price back. They're for wearing, not investing.
Is Michael Kors gold plating durable?
It's plating over steel, which wears with daily use, especially on edges and clasps. Silver steel models wear better. Taking the watch off before washing up, swimming or applying hand cream helps the finish last longer.
What is the Michael Kors Runway?
A slim, minimalist line, one of the brand's most popular. It suits everyday wear and comes in steel, gold and rose gold tones. The Slim Runway is thinner and lighter than the standard Runway, which suits smaller wrists and slides under a cuff.
What size Michael Kors watch should I get?
The full-size Bradshaw and Lexington are large, often 43 mm or more, and are worn deliberately oversized. For a classic fit on a smaller wrist, look for Petite versions or the Slim Runway. Compare the listed size with a watch you already own.
