Before you buy
Emporio Armani watches are made under licence by Fossil Group. Almost all are quartz; the few automatics wind themselves but use the same basic movements as far cheaper watches. The Ceramica models are the interesting ones, because a ceramic case and bracelet resist scratches better than steel. For the price of an Armani automatic, a Seiko 5 Sports or an Orient Bambino is the better self-winding watch.

Before you buy

Who actually makes them.

Emporio Armani watches are designed and made under licence by Fossil Group, the American company that also makes Michael Kors, Diesel and its own Fossil watches. Armani sets the style; Fossil builds, distributes and services them. That's why the build quality and movements are similar to other Fossil-made brands rather than to a traditional watchmaker.

Quartz movements.

Almost every Emporio Armani is quartz, typically using Japanese movements. Quartz is accurate, thin and cheap to run, needing a new battery every couple of years. It's the same basic technology as a watch costing a fraction of the price, so the money is going on the design, case and name rather than the mechanism.

The ranges explained.

Diver models are sporty steel watches with rotating bezels. Gianni T-Bar is a dressy line with a distinctive T-shaped bracelet link. Classic and Paolo are simple everyday dress watches. Ceramica uses ceramic cases and bracelets. Sportivo and the chronographs add a busier, sportier look. The automatics, like the AR60053, add a mechanical movement and an open-heart or skeleton dial.

Ceramica.

The Ceramica models are the interesting ones from a materials point of view. Ceramic is very scratch resistant and stays glossy for years, is lighter than steel and feels warm on the skin. The downside is that it can crack or chip if dropped on a hard floor, and links are harder to resize; take it to a jeweller with ceramic tools.

Automatic models.

The few Emporio Armani automatics wind themselves as you wear them, and the open-heart dials let you see the balance working. They use inexpensive mass-produced automatic movements, the same kind found in watches costing much less, so don't expect the finishing or accuracy of a Seiko Presage or Tissot Powermatic 80.

What the money buys.

You are paying for Armani's design and name, and for a well-finished case and bracelet. For similar money, Citizen, Seiko or Tissot give you better movements, sapphire glass and stronger resale. Buy an Emporio Armani because you like the look, and you'll be happy with it.

Size and fit.

Many men's Emporio Armani watches are 41 to 46 mm and wear big; the chronographs are thick. Women's models and the Gianni T-Bar run from around 32 to 36 mm. Check the case size on each pick and compare it with a watch you already own.

Water resistance and crystals.

Most models are rated to around 50 to 100 m, enough for hand washing and a swim but not diving, despite the Diver name on some. Crystals are usually mineral glass, which can scratch. If you want a real dive watch, look at our dive watch guide.

Resale and servicing.

Fashion watches lose most of their value once bought, so treat this as a purchase to wear rather than to hold. Battery changes are easy at any jeweller; ask them to check the seals. Warranty work goes through Fossil's service centres.

How we choose

We haven't worn every Emporio Armani here. We compared what UK shops sell by the published specs: movement, case material, size, water resistance and bracelet, and chose a spread of styles across the ranges. We're plain that the price is mostly design and name, and we track UK prices and stock through the day. Read our full methodology →

Common questions

Are Emporio Armani watches good quality?

They're decently made fashion watches with reliable quartz movements and solid steel or ceramic cases. They're not technically special, and a Citizen or Seiko at the same price gives you more watch. The appeal is the clean Armani design.

Who makes Emporio Armani watches?

Fossil Group makes them under licence from Armani. Fossil also makes Michael Kors, Diesel and its own Fossil watches, so the build is similar across those brands.

Are Emporio Armani watches Swiss made?

No. Emporio Armani watches typically use Japanese quartz movements and are made in Asia. Armani's dearer Swiss-made watches have been sold under different lines in the past.

Is an Emporio Armani Diver a real dive watch?

Not in the professional sense. Most are rated around 50 to 100 m, enough for swimming, but they aren't built to ISO dive watch standards. Treat the name as a style.

Do Emporio Armani watches hold their value?

Not well. Like most fashion watches, they lose most of their value once bought. If resale matters, a Tissot or Seiko holds value better.

What is the Emporio Armani Gianni T-Bar?

A dressy line named after its distinctive T-shaped bracelet link. It has a slim case and a clean dial, and comes in steel, gold and two-tone versions, with women's and men's sizes.
