Before you buy
Think about their style.
Look at what they wear: gold or silver, bold or minimal, sporty or dressy. Match the brand's style to theirs: Michael Kors for glamour, Emporio Armani for clean design, Gucci for luxury, Versace for statement. If they already own a designer watch, staying with the same house is a safe bet, and if they wear a smartwatch every day, a slim dress watch for evenings may get more wear than a second everyday watch. When in doubt, a plain steel model with a simple dial suits more people than a crystal-set or heavily logoed one.
Size.
If unsure, 28 to 34 mm suits most women and 38 to 42 mm most men. Check any watch they already wear. Designer watches often run large for men (many Emporio Armani and Michael Kors men's models are 43 mm or more) and small for women (Gucci G-Timeless from about 27 to 29 mm). If you can, borrow a watch they already wear and measure it across the case, not including the crown.
Bracelet sizing.
Steel bracelets need links removed. A jeweller does it in minutes. Leather and mesh straps are easier to get right without knowing their wrist size. Ask the shop whether sizing is included, and keep the removed links in the box in case the wearer wants it looser later. A two-piece leather strap with several holes fits most wrists without any adjustment, which makes it the safer choice for a surprise.
Who makes them.
Most designer watches are made under licence by watch groups: Fossil, Movado, Timex. Gucci makes its own. Knowing this helps set expectations. It also tells you where to go for after-sales help: Fossil Group handles warranty work for its brands, Movado Group for Tommy Hilfiger and Hugo Boss, and Gucci and Versace through their own service networks. The watch itself will be much like other watches from the same group.
Quartz movements.
Almost all are quartz, accurate and practical. You're paying for design and name. That is good news for a gift: a quartz watch is ready to wear straight out of the box, keeps good time and only needs a battery every couple of years. If they would love a mechanical watch, the Gucci Dive Automatic and Emporio Armani's open-heart automatics are the few designer options.
Gift packaging.
Designer watches usually come in branded boxes, which add to the gift. Keep the box and papers for warranty and resale. Check that the box and outer sleeve are included when you buy online, as some marketplace sellers ship the watch in plain packaging. The warranty card should be stamped or dated by the seller.
Engraving.
Many can be engraved on the case back, but check first. Engraving usually rules out returns. Glass display backs and busy case backs leave little room, and small women's watches have limited space even when the back is solid. A short message, initials or a date works better than a long inscription.
Returns.
Check the returns window and keep the gift receipt. Buy from an authorised seller so the warranty is valid. Most UK shops give at least 14 days, and many extend returns over Christmas. A watch that has been worn or had links removed may not be returnable, so try it on for size before resizing.
Burberry stock.
Burberry no longer makes watches, so models are remaining stock and may not be replaceable. If you choose a Burberry, buy from a seller with a clear returns policy and check the size carefully, because you may not be able to swap it for another size or colour later.
We haven't tried every watch on. We compared what UK shops sell by published specs: maker, design, size, materials and movement, and chose picks that are easy to get right as gifts. UK prices and stock are tracked through the day. Read our full methodology →

Common questions
What is a good designer watch gift?
Gucci for a luxury gift, Emporio Armani for clean style, Michael Kors for glamour. Choose by their taste. If you don't know their taste well, a plain steel model from any of these houses is the safest choice, as it goes with everything.
What size designer watch should I buy?
If unsure, 28 to 34 mm for women and 38 to 42 mm for men. Look at watches they already wear. Measure across the case of a watch they already own, ignoring the crown. Designer men's watches often run large, so check the listed size rather than assuming.
Are designer watches good gifts?
Yes, for the recognisable name and branded packaging. They're fashion watches first, so choose for the look. They make a strong first impression and come in branded boxes. For a gift that will last decades, a Tissot or Citizen at the same price is the better-made watch.
Can I return a designer watch gift?
Usually, within the seller's returns window, if unworn and in its packaging. Engraved watches usually can't be returned. Keep the protective film on and the links intact until the recipient has tried it, and keep the gift receipt in the box.
Do designer watches come with a warranty?
Yes, when bought from an authorised seller. Keep the warranty card and receipt. Typically two years from the maker. Buying from unauthorised marketplace sellers can leave you without a valid warranty.
Which designer watch brand is best quality?
Gucci is the only house here that makes its own watches, in Switzerland, and Versace watches are Swiss made by Timex Group. Michael Kors, Emporio Armani and Tommy Hilfiger are made in Asia with Japanese quartz movements. All are fashion watches first, so the differences are smaller than the price gaps suggest.
